(HAMILTON) – Authorities are investigating an incident of dogs biting a person.
The DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office says on Monday, deputies responded to a report of a dog bite incident at 107 State Road 1 in Hamilton. When they arrived, deputies made contact with the victim, Tyler Cool, an employee of UPS. He had multiple bite wounds to his head, arms, and abdomen.
Cool says he was delivering a package to the residence when a woman later identified as Maria Dittemore, opened the screen door to sign for the delivery. At that moment, five pitbulls exited the home.
Cool says he attempted to flee, but was bitten on the back of his leg, causing him to fall. He reported that three of the younger dogs then began to bite him. The two older dogs did not engage in the attack, which ended when Dittemore starting yelling at the dogs.
Cool was transported by ambulance to a local hospital for treatment and has since been released.
The investigation determined that Dittemore is the owner of the dogs. She provided documentation confirming the animals’ vaccinations.
Dittemore voluntarily surrendered three of the dogs to Fort Wayne Animal Care and Control, where they will be quarantined in accordance with protocol.
This incident remains under investigation. A decision regarding potential criminal charges has not yet been made.
