(ELKHART) – Authorities say a man is in custody following a standoff that happened on the east side of Elkhart on Sunday.
A call was made to the Elkhart Police Department at 8:15 AM Sunday from a citizen who was concerned about a possible ongoing domestic situation at a home in the 100 block of Witmer Avenue. Officers arrived around 9 AM, and found a female victim outside of the home. They spoke with her and made sure she was all right. Officers then tried several times to call the suspect out of the home, but he barricaded himself inside.
The Elkhart County Regional Swat Team was called to the home. A search warrant for the home was also obtained after officers learned the man may be armed.
SWAT Team members deployed gas canisters inside the home. The man then came out of the house around 12:15 PM and surrendered.
The suspect, a man in his 50’s, was taken to an area hospital due to his exposure to the gas. After being cleared medically the man was taken to the Elkhart County Jail.
The matter is still under investigation.
