(LANSING) – A budget for the State of Michigan has passed one legislative branch and now heads to another branch.
The Michigan House of Representatives passed the $78.5 billion State budget by a vote of 59-45-6. The budget, called the “Value for MI Dollars Budget”, was introduced by Republican State Representative Ann Bollin of Brighton Township, and passed along party lines.
Bollin says this budget will deliver results for the people of Michigan. She says this budget not only cuts the waste, fraud, and abuse, but it also invests where it matters most to Michigan families: in education, public safety, infrastructure, and fixing the roads.
The proposed budget includes $5 billion in cuts to waste, fraud, and abuse across state departments, including the elimination of "phantom positions”. The plan also looks to dedicate $3.14 billion in funding to fix roads without raising taxes, as well as restoring dollars previously cut from Michigan's school safety and mental health funding while offering roughly $12,000 per student for school districts to delegate to initiatives such as free lunch and transportation.
The budget now heads to the Michigan Senate for their review. Lawmakers within the Michigan House and Senate have until September 30 to pass the state budget in order to prevent a shutdown.
