(BRONSON) – A man is in custody following a high speed chase.
Bronson Police Chief Stephen Johnson says at 12:20 AM Tuesday, a police officer tried to stop a pick up that was driving through the city at speeds that are believed to be over 70 miles per hour.
The vehicle went west on West Chicago Road, with the speeds increasing to 110 MPH. The officer says the suspect was driving on the wrong side of the road on several occasions, and even ran a vehicle off the road.
The suspect stopped his pick up, turned it around and drove towards the officer, striking the patrol vehicle and trying to push it backwards. The driver backed up his pickup and drove off eastbound on U.S. 12.
The suspect entered the Bronson City Limits and drove into the Shell Gas Station parking lot. Bronson Police Officer Travis Ferry and Branch County Sheriff’s Deputies used their vehicles to trap the pickup, remove the driver, identified as Scott Metcalf, and take him into custody.
It’s believed that alcohol and drugs played a part in the incident
Metcalf is being held in the Branch County Jail on two counts of assault on a police officer and fleeing. More charges could be brought against him depending on the results of the toxicology report.
