(COLDWATER) – A Coldwater Lake man is still considered incompetent to stand trial on multiple charges.
During a hearing Wednesday in Branch County District Court, both Branch County Prosecutor Zach Stempien and defense attorney Lisa Hanna agreed that 23 year old McCain Matthew Snyder is not competent to stand trial at this time.
The ruling was based on a report that was issued January 8 following an examination for criminal competency and responsibility ordered in June by District Court Judge Brent Weigle to be done on Snyder.
Snyder is facing two counts of assault with intent to murder and two counts of failure to stop at the scene of a serious impairment crash, after he allegedly ran down and injured the grandparents of a girl he was was supposedly stalking.
According to Michigan State Police Snyder allegedly drove his pick up into the grass as he drove out of Simco Drive in Kinderhook Township on June 10, 2024, striking 81 year old David Sluyter and his 77 year old wife Jill Sluyter. Troopers say the Sluyter’s were walking to Snyder's mother’s home to let her know about accusations he made against them.
Troopers says the Sluyters told them that Snyder came to their home earlier Monday, and accused them of sexually abusing their granddaughter, that Snyder was accused of stalking. The Sluyters told the troopers that Snyder told them he would be back.
Snyder is also facing additional charges of aggravated stalking of persons other than the crash victims, malicious use of a telephone service and using a computer to commit a crime.
Even though the court ruled that Snyder is currently incompetent of standing trial, the Court along with Stempien and Hanna there is a good likelihood that Snyder can regain competency after getting treatment at the Forensic Center in Ypsilanti.
Michigan Law says that the deadline for Snyder to be declared competent to stand trial following his treatment is January 1, 2026. Snyder remains held on a bond of $10 million.
