(MISHAWAKA) – An Elkhart man was struck and killed by a train in Mishawaka Friday afternoon.

The Mishawaka Police Department says the incident happened sometime after 1 PM near the crossing of the Norfolk Southern Railroad and South Main Street. According to officers, the 46 year old man was crossing the tracks to get to the nearby Transpo lot. They say the man did not see or hear the approaching train and was struck and killed.

The victim’s identity has not been released.

Mishawaka Police want to remind the public to stay away from the railroad tracks when the crossing gates are down. They also say you should only cross railroad tracks at a marked crossing.
