(ANGOLA) - A Fort Wayne man was arrested and charged after a high-speed police pursuit on Interstate 69 in Steuben County on New Year's Eve.

Indiana State Police say a trooper clocked a dark-colored Dodge Charger traveling 105 miles per hour shortly before 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday, December 31. The driver, identified as 21-year-old Dakota Carter, did not stop when the trooper activated emergency lights and continued northbound. Police say Carter attempted to exit the interstate near the 350-mile marker at County Road 200 West, where the vehicle left the roadway and became stuck in a creek. Carter was taken into custody without incident. No injuries were reported. Investigators say a handgun was thrown from the vehicle during the pursuit and landed in the creek. A member of the Indiana State Police Underwater Search and Rescue Team later recovered the firearm.

Carter faces charges including resisting law enforcement with a vehicle, criminal recklessness with a vehicle while in possession of a handgun, possession of marijuana, and operating while intoxicated involving a controlled substance. Indiana State Police were assisted by the Steuben County Sheriff's Department, the Angola Police Department, and the Indiana State Police Underwater Search and Rescue Team.
