GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WLKI)- A Grand Rapids man died after crashing into a tree and being trapped in a vehicle fire following an attempted stop by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents, according to Grand Rapids Police.
Police say ICE agents attempted to stop the vehicle before the driver fled. The crash happened around 7 a.m. Sunday near Century Avenue Southwest and McKendrick Street Southwest.
The driver, who was the only person in the vehicle, was pronounced dead at the scene. Family members identified him as Mario David Coronado Juarez, a Guatemalan immigrant who had lived and worked in Grand Rapids for about seven years.
Grand Rapids Police said the department had no previous knowledge of or involvement in the situation before officers were called to the crash. The department has asked Michigan State Police to assist with the investigation.
In a statement, Grand Rapids Police said its traffic investigators have limited ability to obtain information from federal agents about the events leading up to the crash. The Department of Homeland Security had not responded to a request for comment.
