WASHINGTON, (WLKI)- The U.S. Department of Agriculture is encouraging Americans to visit their local farmers markets as part of National Farmers Market Week, which is being observed August 2 through August 8.
Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins signed a proclamation recognizing the annual event, highlighting the role farmers markets play in supporting American agriculture, strengthening rural communities, and providing families with access to fresh, locally produced food.
"National Farmers Market Week is about celebrating the farmers and ranchers who produce the safest, highest-quality food in the world and making sure Americans have every opportunity to support them," Rollins said in a statement.
She added that every purchase made at a farmers market helps support American agriculture and rural communities while encouraging consumers to meet the farmers and ranchers who produce their food.
National Farmers Market Week is observed each year during the first full week of August and recognizes the important role local markets play in connecting consumers directly with producers.
According to the USDA, farmers markets create new sales opportunities for farmers and ranchers while making it easier for families to purchase fresh fruits, vegetables, meats, dairy products, baked goods, and other locally produced items. The agency also says the markets help strengthen local economies and increase awareness of where food comes from.
As part of the nation's 250th anniversary celebration, the USDA is also hosting the Great American Farmers Market at the Great American State Fair. The event brings together farmers, ranchers, and food producers from across the country to showcase the diversity of American agriculture and strengthen connections between producers and consumers.
The USDA says National Farmers Market Week is an opportunity for Americans to recognize the work of the nation's farmers and ranchers and is encouraging families to visit their local markets, thank producers, and support local agriculture throughout the week.
