FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WLKI)- John F. Popp, the longtime president of Aunt Millie's Bakeries and a third-generation leader of the family business, has died at the age of 94.
The company announced that Popp passed away on July 31. He is being remembered for decades of leadership that helped grow the Fort Wayne-based bakery into one of the largest family-owned baking companies in the United States, while maintaining a strong focus on employees, education, and community service.
Born on March 2, 1932, to Lucile and Les Popp Sr., Popp grew up in Fort Wayne and graduated from Northside High School before earning his degree from the University of Michigan in 1954. He entered the U.S. Army the same year and later returned home to join the family's bakery business at his mother's request.
Although he stepped away from the company in 1967 to pursue a career in real estate, Popp eventually returned to what was then known as Perfection Bakeries. Under his leadership, the company expanded significantly and became known as Aunt Millie's Bakeries, establishing itself as one of the country's leading family-owned baking companies.
Company leaders said Popp's leadership style centered on investing in people and preserving the legacy of his grandfather, company founder John B. Franke. He championed education, workforce development, and preparing future generations of leaders within the baking industry.
"John Popp believed that success was built on people," Chief Customer Officer Rick Brown said in a statement. "He cared deeply about our employees, our customers, our communities, and the generations of families who have made Aunt Millie's a trusted name. His leadership was defined by humility, kindness, and an unwavering commitment to doing what was right."
Popp's contributions to the industry were recognized in 2021 when he was inducted into the Baking Hall of Fame by the American Society of Bakers and Engineers. He also served on the Indiana Commission of Higher Education.
Despite his passing, Aunt Millie's said its leadership team remains committed to carrying forward Popp's mission and values, adding that company operations will continue without interruption.
The company said memorial service information will be announced at a later date.
