(LANSING) - Legislation that would make Michigan's free school meals program permanent is moving forward in the state Senate.

The Senate Education Committee unanimously approved a package of bills Tuesday that would create and fund a permanent statewide program.

Michigan public schools currently provide free meals to all students, but the program has not been permanently established in state law.

Governor Gretchen Whitmer has urged lawmakers to approve the legislation before she leaves office at the end of the year.

The bills now move to the full Senate for consideration.
