(FORT WAYNE) - Honor Flight Northeast Indiana sends its 56th mission of veterans to Washington, D.C., today.

The one-day trip gives veterans an opportunity to visit the memorials and monuments built in honor of their military service. Honor Flight provides the experience at no cost to participating veterans.

The organization continues to accept applications from veterans who have not yet participated in an Honor Flight mission. Individuals interested in serving as guardians may also apply if they meet program requirements.

The public is invited to welcome the veterans home Wednesday evening at Fort Wayne International Airport.

Supporters planning to attend are asked to arrive by 8:30 p.m. Free parking will be available in the airport's Remote Lot on Ardmore Avenue. Shuttle buses will transport visitors between the lot and the terminal for the veterans' return.

Honor Flight Northeast Indiana says community support remains an important part of the program's mission to recognize and thank veterans for their service..
