(WASHINGTON) - The U.S. Department of Agriculture is tightening rules for stores that accept SNAP benefits, requiring retailers to stock a wider range of nutritious food options.

Under the new rule announced Thursday, SNAP-authorized retailers will be required to carry seven varieties of food across four staple categories: meat and protein, grains, dairy, and fruits and vegetables.

Federal officials say the updated standards more than double previous requirements and place a greater emphasis on fresh and whole foods.

The USDA also says the changes are intended to close loopholes that previously allowed some snack foods to count toward staple food requirements.

Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins said the changes are aimed at improving nutrition access through the SNAP program.

The USDA says nearly 3,200 retailers have faced enforcement action since the current administration took office for failing to meet stocking standards or maintain compliance.

The updated retailer requirements are scheduled to take effect in Fall 2026.
