(INDIANAPOLIS) - Indiana homeowners who rely on private drinking water wells may qualify for free testing this year through the Indiana Department of Environmental Management's 2026 Groundwater Monitoring Network.

The program is designed to help IDEM track groundwater conditions, environmental changes and possible impacts from geology or human activity, while also giving selected homeowners a direct look at the quality of their own well water.

To qualify, property owners must:

  • live in Indiana
  • use an active private residential well
  • make sure the well is listed in the Indiana DNR online well record database
  • be able to provide a copy of that well record
  • complete the online Groundwater Monitoring Network survey by June 1

IDEM says a limited number of homeowners will be selected, with water sampling scheduled between June and October.

Results will be shared directly with participating homeowners.

Because private wells are not regulated by IDEM or the EPA, state officials are also reminding Hoosiers that regular well testing remains one of the best ways to monitor drinking water safety.

More information on the program and routine well testing guidance is available through IDEM and the Indiana Department of Health websites.
