(LANSING) - Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel says she will intervene in Consumers Energy's latest electric rate hike request after the utility signaled it plans another filing on or after June 2nd.

The announcement comes just days after regulators approved a $276.6 million rate increase that takes effect May 1st. Nessel says her office will work to keep the next proposed increase as low as possible for Michigan customers.

In a statement from her office, Nessel called the repeated filings a "relentless and unsustainable" cycle of rate hikes, saying Michigan families are being trapped in an endless loop of rising utility costs.

Consumers serves roughly 1.9 million electric customers statewide, and the utility is expected to formally file the new case in June
