(INDIANAPOLIS) - Indiana State Police say commercial vehicle troopers completed 4,705 inspections in March, taking hundreds of unsafe drivers and trucks off the road.

The Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division says the inspections resulted in 499 drivers and 579 vehicles being placed out of service because of safety or compliance violations.

Troopers also issued citations for 34 oversize violations and 174 overweight violations during the month.

State police say CVED officers also took part in the March M and M Blitz, a nationwide enforcement effort tied to fuel tax and registration compliance before the end of the annual grace period.

During that operation, officers checked 1,239 credentialed vehicles and found violations including:

  • 17 unregistered IFTA vehicles
  • 81 missing renewals or decals
  • 39 IRP violations
  • 22 Unified Carrier Registration violations

Inspectors also checked 76 trucks for dyed fuel compliance, issuing one violation.

State police say March is typically considered a soft enforcement period, where many violations result in warnings, but stricter enforcement began April 1st with another compliance blitz planned for May.
