(ANGOLA) - Lake James Christian Camp has landed a $3.9 million matching grant from Lilly Endowment, launching a major expansion and renovation effort ahead of the camp's 100th anniversary in 2029.
The Herald Republican reports the funding comes through Lilly's Capital Project Initiative for Residential Youth Camps and follows an additional $1 million grant awarded in December 2025.
Camp leaders say the grants are fueling the $8.8 million "Inspire Initiative" capital campaign, with matching funds needing to be raised over the next five years.
Planned projects include four new sleeping lodges, expanded year-round housing for more than 350 campers and guests, renovations to Steven's Chapel, an elevator addition at Memorial Hall for handicap accessibility, and construction of a high ropes course.
Organizers say the goal is to complete several of the projects in time for the camp's centennial celebration in 2029.
The camp will also host two Nights of Inspiration events May 16 and 17 from 5 to 7 p.m. to share details of the vision and fundraising campaign.
The Herald Republican says camp leadership also credited the Steuben County Community Foundation for helping support the effort.
