(THREE RIVERS & UNION CITY) - Tornadoes that swept across southwest Michigan Friday afternoon left at least four people dead, injured several others, and caused widespread damage in multiple communities.

Authorities report three deaths in Branch County and one death in Cass County after powerful storms moved through the region.

One tornado touched down near U.S. 131 in the Three Rivers area before moving northeast, damaging homes and businesses. Some structures suffered major damage, including walls and roofs torn away. Power lines and poles were also knocked down, disrupting electricity and traffic signals.

Another tornado struck the Union Lake area near Union City, where three people were killed and at least 12 others were injured. Emergency officials say three of the injured were transported to hospitals for treatment.

The storms left a trail of destruction in parts of Branch, Cass, and St. Joseph counties. Fallen trees, debris, and downed power lines blocked roads and damaged structures across several areas.

Union City officials say more than 2,200 residents lost electricity after the storm.

Emergency responders, village crews, and utility workers are working to assess the damage and clear debris from roadways. A mobile command center has been established in the village to coordinate recovery efforts.

Officials are asking residents to avoid unnecessary travel, particularly in the hardest-hit areas, so emergency crews and utility workers can safely restore services.

Cleanup and damage assessments are expected to continue as crews work to restore power and reopen roads. Further updates are expected as more information becomes available.
