(WATERLOO) - The founder of a longtime DeKalb County dog rescue is facing multiple misdemeanor charges following an investigation into the care of animals at the facility.

According to WANE-TV, Cara Seiler, founder and director of Canine Haven Rescue in Waterloo, has been charged with 12 counts of animal cruelty. Court records filed Wednesday allege Seiler knowingly or recklessly abandoned or neglected dogs while they were in her custody.

The DeKalb County Sheriff's Office led the investigation. Additional details are expected as court documents are reviewed.

Earlier this month, Canine Haven Rescue posted on Facebook that it would be "taking a step back" to reorganize operations, citing a recent event but not directly referencing the investigation.

Canine Haven Rescue is a nonprofit organization that has operated for 13 years. Seiler has previously said dogs not placed in foster homes or adopted were housed at her residence. The rescue has taken in dogs from high-kill shelters and owner surrenders across the country.

In December, the organization partnered with national fundraising group Jordan's Way, raising thousands of dollars after being selected as a tour stop.

The case remains pending in DeKalb Superior Court.
