(ANGOLA) - Pokagon State Park is giving Hoosiers a fresh way to welcome the new year--outdoors and on foot.

As part of Indiana's statewide First Day Hikes program, Pokagon will host a guided hike on January 1 that combines community, nature, and a healthy start to the year. The event begins at 2 p.m. on Thursday, January 1st, 2026 at the park's Civilian Conservation Corps Shelter, where the Friends of Pokagon will hold a brief member meeting and recognize park volunteers. Following the program, hikers will head out on a 2.5-mile guided hike along a moderate trail through the park.

Light refreshments will be provided after the hike. Participants are encouraged to dress for winter weather and wear comfortable, sturdy shoes.

First Day Hikes take place annually in state parks across all 50 states, offering people an opportunity to start the year with exercise, fresh air, and time outdoors. The program began more than 30 years ago and continues to grow as a popular New Year's Day tradition.

Pokagon is one of many Indiana state park properties hosting hikes on January 1.
