(ANGOLA) - Steuben County officials are urging residents to prepare for a blast of bitter cold as temperatures and wind chills plunge over the next several days. Emergency Management says several local businesses have volunteered to serve as warming centers for anyone needing a safe place to escape the cold.

The National Weather Service reports the coldest air of the season is moving in, with temperatures staying below freezing through early next week. Near-record lows are possible early Friday, and wind chills could drop to between zero and ten below Thursday night into Friday morning.

Officials recommend limiting time outdoors, preparing for power outages, and checking on elderly neighbors and vulnerable family members. Pets should be kept warm and indoors, and homeowners are encouraged to insulate pipes and open cabinet doors to let warm air circulate.

Residents looking for shelter are encouraged to contact local businesses, municipalities, or stay with friends and family if possible.
