(INDIANAPOLIS) - An Indiana state senator says he plans to introduce legislation next year to legalize medical marijuana in Indiana.

State Senator Mike Bohacek, a Republican from Michiana Shores, announced he has begun work on a proposal for the 2027 session of the Indiana General Assembly.

Bohacek's proposal would legalize medical marijuana, establish rules for medical use, and create tax policies for the sale and distribution of cannabis products.

The announcement follows last month's federal reclassification of state-licensed medical marijuana by the Trump Administration.

Governor Mike Braun has previously said he would be open to medical cannabis legislation if supported by law enforcement.

Bohacek said his proposal would not legalize recreational marijuana in Indiana.

The senator also says the legislation would update Indiana impairment laws, establish THC blood concentration standards tied to impairment, and create additional law enforcement training related to THC impairment detection.

Bohacek said the proposal is intended to include regulations governing the medical use and distribution of marijuana products in Indiana.
