(INDIANAPOLIS) - Indiana Attorney General Todd Rokita is warning residents about illegal mortgage relief scams targeting homeowners.

Rokita says scammers are sending fraudulent offers promising help with mortgage payments, often requesting upfront fees.

State law makes it illegal for companies to charge upfront for mortgage assistance services.

Officials say homeowners should be cautious of common warning signs, including being told to stop communicating with their lender, being asked to pay through wire transfers or mobile apps, or being pressured to transfer the deed to their home.

Indiana has ranked among the states with higher foreclosure rates, making it a target for these types of scams.

The Attorney General's Office urges Hoosiers to work directly with their lender to explore legitimate assistance options and to report suspected scams.
