(MERRILLVILLE) - NIPSCO says it has initiated a lockout of employees represented by the United Steelworkers after months of contract negotiations failed to produce a tentative agreement by the extended April 2 deadline.

The company says talks with union leaders had been underway since January 20, with nearly 200 proposals discussed during bargaining.

NIPSCO says its final proposal included a 4% across-the-board wage increase for the life of the contract, a $5,000 ratification bonus if approved by April 10, expanded leave benefits, vision coverage improvements and additional safety equipment allowances.

The company says one of the remaining disagreements involved the union's push for double-time pay in certain overtime situations.

NIPSCO says the lockout will remain in place while it continues efforts to reach a ratified contract.

The utility says it has activated continuity plans using non-represented employees, qualified contractors and support from affiliated companies to maintain electric and gas service during the labor dispute.

The company says it remains available to continue bargaining with union leadership.
