(BRYAN) - A downtown Bryan homeless shelter is expanding to serve more people in need.

The Sanctuary Homeless Shelter plans to purchase two neighboring buildings to increase housing and service capacity. The shelter has operated in the same location for more than 30 years.

Officials say the expansion will allow the shelter to assist up to 150 people each year, up from its current capacity of about 100.

The ground floors of the buildings will remain home to local businesses, while apartments above one building will be used for housing.

Plans also include adding classroom and office space, along with an outdoor art area in the alley to feature local artists.

Shelter leaders say the goal is to expand services while remaining a strong partner in the downtown community.
