(PORTLAND) - The semi driver accused in a crash that killed four people in Jay County has made his first court appearance.
Thirty-year-old Bekzhan Beishekeev appeared Monday in Jay County Circuit Court with a translator. He is charged with four counts of reckless homicide and three counts of criminal recklessness.
The charges stem from a February 3 crash on State Road 67, where investigators say his truck crossed into oncoming traffic and hit a van head-on.
Four men from Bryant were killed: Henry Eicher, Menno Eicher, Paul Eicher, and Simon Girod.
Beishekeev had previously been in federal custody on an immigration warrant before being returned to Indiana for the case.
A pretrial hearing is scheduled for May 27.
The case has drawn national attention, with federal officials taking action against the trucking company and driving school tied to the driver.
