(INDIANAPOLIS) - Indiana lawmakers are preparing for a final vote on legislation that would set statewide guidelines for how public agencies cooperate with federal immigration authorities.
Senate Bill 76 outlines procedures for schools, universities, police departments and local governments when handling immigration matters. The measure would also allow the state attorney general to enforce compliance and impose fines of up to $10,000 per violation.
Supporters say the bill clarifies existing law and ensures consistent cooperation with federal agencies, while opponents warn it could create added administrative burdens and raise civil rights concerns.
The proposal has already passed the Indiana House and now returns to the Senate for final consideration.
