(COLDWATER) - The City of Coldwater says it will vigorously defend itself after being named in a lawsuit involving payments in lieu of taxes, or PILOT, tied to the city's Electric Fund.

Following an initial review, city officials said they believe the allegations have no merit.

In a news release issued Friday, the City and the Coldwater Board of Public Utilities (CBPU) said they strive to comply with all applicable laws and regulations and strongly deny any claims of improper or unlawful conduct. Officials emphasized their commitment to transparency, accountability, and responsible management of public funds.

City Attorney Amanda O'Boyle said the decisions of the City Council and CBPU are made during public meetings that are open to residents and available for online viewing.

"The claims alleged in this lawsuit are baseless and the City intends to assert a meritorious defense in court," O'Boyle said. "The City will address the specific allegations through the proper judicial channels."

Officials added that the city remains focused on serving Coldwater residents and maintaining reliable utility services while the legal process moves forward.
