(LANSING) - A Michigan lawmaker is proposing new financial relief for small businesses struggling to survive prolonged road construction and street closures.

The legislation would create a grant program allowing eligible businesses to receive up to $15,000 if they can show significant financial losses tied to unexpected delays or extended infrastructure projects. Supporters say the measure is designed to help businesses that lose customers when detours, blocked access, and reduced traffic drag on for months.

Small business owners say the impact can be devastating. One co-owner interviewed by WNEM-TV said construction near his store sharply reduced foot traffic and revenue, ultimately forcing layoffs.

"We love our employees; they're like one big family. But we had to -- we had no choice," he said.

Backers of the bill argue that while infrastructure improvements are necessary, the economic burden often falls heavily on nearby small businesses that lack the reserves to withstand prolonged disruptions.

The proposal is scheduled for its formal reading on the Michigan House floor Wednesday, Feb. 18. Lawmakers say the goal is to provide targeted support to local businesses facing sustained hardship while communities complete critical upgrades to roads and utilities.
