(SOUTH BEND) - A 34-year-old inmate was found dead Friday afternoon inside the St. Joseph County Jail, according to Indiana State Police.

In a press release, ISP said Dustin Pate was found unresponsive in his cell around 12:35 p.m. during routine cell checks. Jail staff attempted life-saving measures while waiting for medics to arrive, but Pate was pronounced dead at the jail.

State police said no foul play is suspected. An autopsy is scheduled to be conducted Sunday, Feb. 1, at Western Michigan University.

Pate had been in custody since Jan. 19. He was facing multiple charges, including two counts of attempted murder, resisting law enforcement, disarming a law enforcement officer, battery, forced residential entry, auto theft, intimidation, striking a law enforcement animal, failure to remain at the scene of an accident, and a separate theft charge.

According to police, the charges stemmed from an incident in Granger in which Pate allegedly attempted to break into a home. After police were called, Pate fled, and officers pursued before ending the chase due to poor weather conditions.

Police later reported that Pate struck another vehicle in Mishawaka and attempted to flee on foot. During the pursuit, authorities say he made verbal threats, attempted to take another vehicle, and assaulted officers while resisting arrest.

Police say Pate punched a K-9, assaulted two officers, disarmed one officer and fired a shot that did not strike anyone. He then attempted to strike another officer with the weapon before officers were able to bring him under control.

Pate was taken to a hospital before being booked into the St. Joseph County Jail. He was scheduled to have his initial court hearing on Feb. 5.
