(MARSHALL) - Hans Schuler, the longtime third-generation owner and leader of the iconic Schuler's Restaurant & Pub in Marshall, has died at the age of 88.

Schuler grew up in the family business founded by his grandfather in 1909 and formally joined the restaurant in 1959. He went on to serve for decades as chairman and president, helping guide Schuler's through generations of growth while preserving its reputation as a Michigan dining landmark.

He is credited with expanding the brand beyond the restaurant itself, most notably by refining and commercializing Schuler's Bar Scheeze, which became a nationally distributed retail product.

Beyond the kitchen, Schuler was a prominent civic figure in Marshall. He received numerous honors over the years, including Restaurateur of the Year and the Governor's Ambassador of Tourism Award, recognizing his contributions to both the hospitality industry and the local community.

In 2019, Schuler sold the restaurant to longtime colleague Sue Damron to ensure its continued success, but he remained closely connected to the business and a familiar presence at the historic location.

Schuler's legacy remains deeply tied to Marshall, where Schuler's Restaurant & Pub continues to operate as one of the city's most recognizable institutions.
