(ANGOLA) - Angola's Common Council took less than three minutes Monday night to re-elect Dave Olson as mayor pro tempore.
Olson, who represents District B, was the only nomination for the position, which designates a council member to serve as mayor in the event Mayor Dave Martin is unavailable. Before the vote, at-large council member Jerry McDermid offered brief remarks highlighting the city's nonpartisan approach to leadership.
Referencing past administrations, McDermid noted that Martin, a Republican, previously served as mayor pro tem under former Democratic Mayor Richard Hickman, just as Olson, a Democrat, now serves under Martin.
"It's nice to see that we are not partisan in city government," McDermid said, adding, "Most of the time."
Martin responded with a smile toward Olson, saying the comment was a compliment to both of them.
In other business, Martin asked council members to make themselves available for joint meetings with Pleasant Township Trustees as discussions continue on establishing a new fire territory. Street Commissioner Chad Ritter also reported that city crews will begin removing Christmas decorations on Wednesday.
