GREENVILLE, ILL. -- The Trine University men's volleyball team suffered a 3-0 loss against Greenville (Ill.) University in a Midwest Collegiate Volleyball League match in Greenville, Ill.
Freshman Eric Santiago-Garcia (San Juan, Puerto Rico/Glen Ridge) led the team in kills with five and was followed by freshmen Luke Maier (Colorado Springs, Colo./Doherty) and Dan Boren (Fort Wayne, Ind./Homestead) with four kills each.
Junior Hunter Monday (Beech Grove, Ill./Lutheran) recorded all 19 of the team's set assists and also had a team and match-high four service aces.
Maier and freshman Kyle Dixon (Lockport, Ill./Lockport Twp.) led the team in digs with seven apiece. Monday had a team-best two total blocks with a solo block and an assist.
Trine (6-12, 0-7 MCVL) trailed by a single point in the first set, 9-8, after a kill by Boren and an ace by Monday, when Greenville (13-14, 1-6 MCVL) went on a 13-1 scoring run to take a commanding 22-9 advantage. Dixon ended the run with a kill, but the Panthers tallied the final points it needed to claim the set by a final of 25-12.
Greenville led for the majority of set of number two, but Trine recorded its only lead of the game with a 14-12 advantage that was the result of a 5-1 run that included kills by freshman Jackson Condrey (Spokane, Wash./Ferris), Santiago-Garcia, Maier and Boren along with aces by Condrey and Monday. After a timeout by the Panthers, Greenville tallied three straight points to regain control and didn't relinquish the lead the rest of the way. Trine came back to even the set at 15-15 and trailed by just three points on two occasions late which included a 24-21 deficit following another kill by Santiago-Garcia. Greenville then got the winning point to post a 25-21 victory and take a 2-0 match lead.
The third set belonged to the Panthers early who worked their way out to a five-point advantage, 8-3. Trine chipped away at the deficit and tied the game at 14-14 thanks to another ace by Monday. Greenville scored an ensuing three unanswered points to jump out ahead, 17-14, and later found itself up by seven points by a score of 24-17. The Thunder scored back-to-back points on a kill by Hunter and a Panther error before the home team recorded the final point to go on to win the set by a final of 25-19 and take the overall match by a 3-0 shutout.
Trine will play its final two matches of the season at home beginning with a MCVL matchup against Loras (Iowa) College on Friday, Apr. 5 at Hershey Hall. The match is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
