Friday was a celebration for all of Brushy Prairie in the rural town of Emma, Indiana as the Prairie Heights Panthers defeated the Westview Warriors in the Northeast Corner Conference boys basketball semifinal game.
Swick Broadcasting Company’s radio broadcasting team of Michael McIntrye and Casey Rowe (Thunder Country 105.5) said during their fourth quarter radio broadcast of the game they didn’t want the game to end because it was so good to watch. The broadcasting pair even joked about hopes for an overtime, and as it turned out, they got their wish.
During the overtime play action between the two LaGrange County rivals, Elijah Malone of the Panthers was fouled by Westview’s Charlie Yoder at the buzzer. The foul gave Malone the opportunity for two shots.
Malone missed his first free throw, but landed his second. It all happened with just four tenths of a second left on the clock. For Malone, his team, and every panther fan in the stand, it was four tenths of a second they will never forget. When the buzzer finally sounded, it was a win for Prairie Heights over Westview 47-46.
The entire game was a battle between two great basketball teams from LaGrange County, Indiana. Friday night’s game was a classic, and was certainly a night of basketball that LaGrange County fans won’t forget for a long time.
The NECC Championship game will take place Saturday night in Garrett. The first game will be the girls championship, with Angola playing against Fairfield, starting at 6 p.m. The boys championship will follow, where Prairie Heights will battle with Central Noble.
Although the Panthers have defeated the Warriors in the NECC tournament, it will not be the last time the two face-off. Local basketball fans can expect a packed house when Westview takes the road to Brushy Prairie on February 14th, when Prairie Heights play host to Warriors in regular season play. For basketball lovers, it will be a Valentines Day to remember.
