SILVER CREEK TOWNSHIP – One person is dead in a multiple snowmobile collision.
Cass County Sheriff Richard Behnke says his department was called out just after 10 PM Saturday to investigate the incident on a snowmobile trail near the intersection of Indian Lake Road and Topash Street.
Deputies determined that 21 year old Robert Schroeder of Coloma and 38 year old Andrew Mayer of Covert were traveling west on the trail. 45 year old Keith Webster of Elkhart was heading east. Both groups approached the hill and collided. Webster was pronounced dead at the scene from his injuries.
Schroeder was flown to South Bend Memorial Hospital by Med Flight. Mayer was taken by ambulance to Lakeland St. Joseph Hospital. Speed is believed to be a factor in the crash. It's unknown if alcohol or drugs were a factor in the incident.
Assisting at the scene were Pride Care Ambulance, the Sister Lakes and Indian Lake Fire Departments, the Dowagiac Police Department and the Tribal Police Department. The case is still under investigation.
