Man Dies From Self-Inflicted Gunshot After Police Stand-Off
Thursday, April 9, 2020

Coldwater, MI – A 43-year-old Coldwater man died Wednesday night of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound after firing at Coldwater police officers from a house on Park Place.

According to police, they received a 9-1-1 call from the house at 9:40 p.m. on Wednesday night. Officers responded to what they reported as a "domestic situation" involving a violation of bond. The bond condition stipulated no unwanted contact between the suspect and the female resident, and was issued after the man was arrested for misdemeanor assault in January 2020.

Police say that when they arrived, the suspect barricaded himself in a bedroom and they heard a noise that sounded like he was loading a firearm. Officers hurried one adult female and her kids out of the house to safety.

Coldwater Police said in a news release that a series of gunshots rang out from inside the house, with bullets whizzing past them. Officers did not return fire. An officer from the Quincy Police Department and several troopers from the Michigan State Police arrived to assist, forming a perimeter around the house.

In addition, Coldwater Police requested the Michigan State Police's Emergency Services Team to help safely resolve the situation. As the team was gathering, officers heard what sounded like two more gunshots from within the house.

The Emergency Services Team surrounded the house and repeatedly attempted to contact the suspect, but they received no answer. Eventually, using a remote camera, they were able to locate the man in the bedroom. He had died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Authorities are not releasing the name of the deceased pending notification of his next of kin.

The case remains under investigation.
