DeKalb County, IN - A DeKalb County man died Friday when he was attempting to cut down a tree.


According to the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Department, units responded to the 1100 Block County Road 40 in reference to a tree that had fallen on a man. Upon arrival, officers found a male victim, identified as Layton Casselman, unresponsive.

A DeKalb County Sheriff’s Department news release said “it appeared that Casselman was attempting to cut down a tree when it fell in an unexpected direction”. Reports indicate that Casselman became pinned underneath.

Police, Fire, and EMS worked on reviving Casselman but efforts were unsuccessful. Casselman was pronounced dead at the scene.
