The Christmas holiday season is here. And if you have not already, you will probably be putting up your Christmas tree soon.
The Branch-Hillsdale-St. Joseph Community Health Agency says there are a
few tips to keep in mind when decorating your tree. If you plan on having a real tree, choose one that has fresh, green needles which do not fall off when touched.
When you get your tree home, before placing it in the stand, cut two inches from the base of the trunk. Make sure that it is at least three feet away from any heat source. Also keep the tree from blocking an exit and remember to add water to the stand daily.
When lighting your tree, whether it is real or artificial, use lights that have the label of an independent testing laboratory. Replace any string of lights with worn or broken cords or loose bulb connections. Never use lit candles to decorate the tree and always turn off Christmas tree lights before leaving home or going to bed.
After Christmas is over, get rid of your tree as soon as possible. Dried out trees are a fire danger and should not be left in the home or garage, or placed outside against your home. Check and see if your community has a recycling program for trees.
Also bring outdoor electrical lights inside after the holidays to prevent hazards and to make them last longer.
