Conservation Officers say a hunter fell from a tree stand near Fremont Tuesday evening.
It happened around 7:30 p-m in the 1300 block of east State Road 120. 34-year-old Matt Goins of Fremont was hunting from a stand in the woods behind his home. Goins was wearing a full safety harness but had unhooked the tether from the tree as he prepared to climb down.
When he stepped on the top step of climbing sticks the strap was dislodged causing him to fall about 20 feet to the ground.
Goins called his wife from the base of the tree and she called 9-1-1. Fremont firefighters along with Fremont Police, Steuben County medics and Conservation Officers responded.
Goins was taken by ambulance to Parkview Regional Medical Center. Conservation Officers reminded hunters to always wear a safety harness and lifeline system when their feet are off the ground and to always check the condition of their equipment.
