Quest For Wanted Northern Indiana Man Continues

The quest for a wanted man in Northern Indiana is still in full force. On Friday morning around 1:30 A.M., Steuben County Sheriff's Deputies responded to the area of the West Otter Lake Public Access Site off of US 20 near SR 327 in rural Jackson Township to investigate a tip on the possible whereabouts of 21-year-old Vincent H. Chilcote.

The Sheriff's Office received information Chilcote was presently at that location possibly in a black Dodge pickup truck or silver Chevy pickup truck. Chilcote had active arrest warrants out of Steuben, LaGrange, and Noble Counties. Chilcote failed to appear in Steuben County on a charge of burglary with a deadly weapon, a level 2 felony. Chilcote also failed to appear in LaGrange and Noble Counties on charges of level 6 felony theft as well as misdemeanor theft.

Upon the arrival of responding deputies, two vehicles matching the descriptions provided in the tip were located at the access site. Deputies approached the Chevy pickup truck and made contact with a male driver identified as Vincent Chilcote. While attempting to take Chilcote into custody on the arrest warrants, Chilcote started to flee in the vehicle. Preliminary investigation revealed that Chilcote attempted to run over one of the deputies attempting to make the arrest, causing the deputy to use his issued firearm to protect his own life striking Chilcote's vehicle with rounds from the deputy's issued firearm.

Chilcote continued to flee the scene and was pursued by the Sheriff's Office into a bean field near the intersection of CR 900 W and CR 300 N. Chilcote then abandoned his vehicle in the field and continued to flee on foot. After an extensive search of the area, Chilcote could not be located.

The deputy's name who was involved in the incident is being withheld pending a full investigation by the Sheriff&'s Office, and has been placed on administrative leave per Sheriff's Office policy. While the investigation continues.

There Sheriff's Office remains committed to the safety of the citizens of Steuben County and seeks the public's assistance with the locating and apprehending of this wanted fugitive. Vincent Chilcote is described as a white male standing 5' tall, and weighing approximately 130 pounds and is considered armed and dangerous.
