Trine Men's Soccer Wins Overtime Thriller with Olivet
Saturday, October 19, 2019

The Trine University men's soccer team came up with the game-winner in overtime to take their first victory of the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) season against visiting Olivet College by the score of 2-1.

The Thunder struck first in the contest making the most of a free-kick awarded to them just outside the penalty box. Senior Nooh Aljabaly (Coldwater, Mich. / Coldwater) tapped the ball to start the play and sophomore Brian Morris (Metamora, Mich. / Lapeer) took the shot. Morris placed it perfectly over the outstretched hands of the Comets' keeper into the upper right corner of the goal.

The 1-0 lead in favor of Trine looked like it would be enough for the victory as it held going into the final minutes of play. But in the 89th minute of the contest, Olivet came away with the equalizer.

The Thunder still almost came away with the victory in regulation as in the final seconds of the contest freshman Jared Cromwell put a header just over the crossbar in the final seconds of play.

Trine dominated the overtime period keeping the ball mostly in the offensive end, but it took until the seventh minute to finally put the contest away. Sophomore Connor Malmquist (Valparaiso, Ind. / Morgan Township) worked his way to the end line behind the defense and pushed a pass into the penalty box. Sophomore Trevor Towghi (Portage, Mich. / Portage Northern) was waiting in the perfect spot and blasted a shot into the right side of the net. The goal gave the Thunder the victory by the score of 2-1.

Despite surrendering the lone goal, freshman Austin Hensley (Noblesville, Ind. / Noblesville) turned in a strong performance in net coming away with four saves while also shutting down a few strong corner attempts from the opposition.

Following the victory, Trine improves to 5-7 overall and 1-3 in MIAA competition. They will continue their season by traveling to face Adrian College on Tuesday, Oct. 22. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
