A 36 year old woman from Waterport, New York was arrested by Trooper Zarek Finley late Tuesday night, July 31st, on charges stemming from two separate incidents which occurred within two hours of one another in Howe, IN.
According to Finley, at approximately 10:05 p.m. he was about to enter the Toll Road at the Howe Toll Plaza when he saw a suspicious 1997 Toyota SUV parked behind the building where no one should have been parked.
Finley found 36 year old Christina L. Best laying down in the back of the SUV. After getting her to wake up, she refused to identify herself and became very loud, confused and profane. After a few minutes, Finley was finally able to obtain her New York driver's license, which was expired. The Toyota was impounded and Finley gave Best a ride to the Super 8 motel in Howe.
At approximately 11:50 p.m., 20 minutes after dropping Best off, Finley overheard a dispatch of a disorderly individual at the Super 8 in Howe. He responded along with LaGrange County Sheriff Deputies and upon further investigation, learned that Best was the disorderly individual. As he attempted to take her into custody, she physically resisted despite the Finley's verbal commands.
Best was eventually subdued and incarcerated in the LaGrange County Jail on the following preliminary charges of Refusal to Identify, Possession of a Controlled Substance, Unlawful Use/Calling 911, Resisting Law Enforcement, and Disorderly Conduct.
No one was injured during the incident. On Thursday, August 2nd, Finley was contacted by Region VI Dispatch and informed that they had received a delayed "hit" on the Toyota SUV in which he found Best laying in two days prior. As a result of further investigation, Finley learned that the Toyota had been reported as stolen in California. An added preliminary charge of Theft, a Level 6 Felony was added. Best remains incarcerated in the LaGrange County Jail.
Finley was assisted by the LaGrange County Sheriff Department, the LaGrange Police Department and an off-duty Shipshewana Police Officer.
