A large fire burned from a pile of scrap metal at a recycling facility Monday afternoon in Waterloo.
Multiple fire crews began being called in at around 12:30 p.m. on a report of a fire located at Metal X located at 295 Commerce Drive. A dark, thick bellowing of smoke could be seen rising high from the recycling plant, which covered the area and even hampered visibilty on nearby I-69.
Fire crews from Waterloo, Corunna, Auburn, Kendallville, Butler, Angola, Ashley, Garrett, and multiple other responded to the blaze. Crews were still putting the fire late Monday night and keeping a watchful eye on the site well into the early hours of Tuesday morning.
MetalX issued a news release indicating the fire started at around noon in a pile of scrap metal near a shredder. It is not known yet what exactly caused the fire. According to Metal X, no injuries were reported.
The company did indicated that “employees were monitored for smoke inhalation near the scene” at the high point of the blaze. In addition, Metal X says that they do not accept hazardous materials.
The recycling company plans to be at full operation on Tuesday.
