Lakeland Board Moves Forward on Bond Issue

The Lakeland School Board agreed Monday to do a new bond issue to pay for repairs and updates to facilities.

The board will decide later this month whether the amount of the bond issue is $2.5 million or $4.5 million dollars. The higher amount would keep the corporation’s debt service rate the same since the 20-year bond for the high school auxiliary gym is coming off the tax rolls.

That fact didn’t win over board member Carey McKibben. As a farmer he noted that his overall tax bill continues to increase.

School Board President Bob Bond said the district’s capital projects fund may not be sufficient to make the needed repairs due to potential changes by the state. He said if the district doesn’t maintain a certain level of debt service, other taxing entities in the county would likely take up the slack.

McKibben countered saying that’s the problem with government – it always seeks the maximum. He voted against the motion.

Students return to classes August 15th. The district still has five teaching vacancies, with good prospects of filling four of those. Only the search for a high school math teacher is proving to be difficult.
