Large Part of Dallas Lake Park to Become Nature Preserve
Tuesday Aug 08, 2017 11:32am
Dallas Lake • LaGrange, IN

By: Tim Murray

The LaGrange County Commissioners agreed Monday to designate almost 95 acres of Dallas Lake County Park as a state nature preserve.

The combination of savanna and wetland known as Pond Lil was added to the park in recent years. The Department of Natural Resources is interested in dedicating it a nature preserve, and LaGrange County Parks and Recreation Director Mike Metz says that would offer some advantages, such as improved odds of getting grants for the park, another level of protection for the property, and technical assistance in doing further work in the area.

Maplewood Nature Center has carried the nature preserve designation for many years and Metz says that has caused no issues for the county.

The commissioners approved the purchase of a new Dodge Ram pickup truck from LaGrange Country Dodge for the parks department at a cost of $26,194.

They also authorized County Attorney Kurt Bachman to file a lawsuit against Robert Hicks of 6035 South County Road 450 East. They say Hicks failed to pay the fines levied against him for a nuisance violation back in June and has not cleaned up the property to bring it into compliance. The fine of $200 per week was retroactive to March 20th.
