Banks Applauds Bill to Extend Veterans Choice Program Becoming Law
Thursday Apr 20, 2017 3:19pm
Washington, DC

By: Sheila McCrea

Indiana Congressman Jim Banks, who is also a member of the House Committee on Veterans' Affairs, commended President Donald Trump for signing legislation to extend the Veterans Choice program into law. The Veterans Choice program allows veterans to receive services outside the VA medical system.

Congressman Banks says that “this bill ensures that the money Congress set aside for the Veterans Choice program will stay in the program while necessary reforms are made”. Banks added that “the extension of this program will give Congress time to thoughtfully reform it, so that veterans aren’t left with a gap in health care".

The Veterans Choice program was set to expire in August without the legislation being recently signed into law. If the program had ended in August, a significant amount of money originally set aside for the program would have been returned to the Treasury Department and veterans could have potentially been left without care.

The legislation signed into law now ensures that previously allocated funds will spent on the Choice Program while the Congress works to reform the program.
