EAST LANSING – The Michigan High School Athletic Association is still trying to figure out what to do about Winter contact sports.
MHSAA Executive Director Mark Uyl (yule) issued a statement Monday afternoon on the topic of Winter contact sports, which includes boys and girls basketball, wrestling, ice hockey and competitive cheer. Last Friday, Governor Gretchen Whitmer announced that those sports would remain on pause for contact activities, including competition, until February 21. That was due to the most recent update to the emergency order from the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services.
Uyl says the MHSAA is unable to provide specific plans yet, as they are still evaluating the best options for delivering a memorable experience for 60,000 athletes involved in Winter contact sports. Uyl says they are still asking questions and advocating for all of their schools and athletes as they work toward building their next plans for seasons in basketball, competitive cheer, ice hockey and wrestling.
Uyl says the MHSAA will be ready with specific timelines as soon as the MDHHS clears contact sports to begin full activity. Uyl says from the start of the 2020-21 school year, the MHSAA would do everything possible to have three sports seasons and to play all three to completion.
