Semi Fire Shuts Down Portion Of I-69
Saturday, February 22, 2020

Branch County, MI - Ovid Township – An early morning semi fire shut down a portion of I-69 in Branch County.

At 4:40 AM Friday, Michigan State Police were sent to the northbound lanes of I-69 near the weigh station in Ovid Township. A semi was hauling a double trailer that was transporting nitric acid in both trailers.

The rear trailer brakes caught on fire and the trailer became engulfed in flames.

The northbound lanes on I-69 were shut down between the three and four mile markers until the Lakeland Fire Department was able to extinguish the fire and make sure travel could be done safely. One of the northbound lanes was opened to traffic at 7 AM.

HAZMAT was called in to help with the clean up, and the second northbound lane was open at 10 AM. Troopers say the nitric acid was cargo in the trailer and there were no issues with the acid.
